The military cemetery in Lang is the most important historical monument of the First World War in the region. During the war, the former military camp was located in the Leibnitzer Feld on the territory of the municipalities of Lebring and Lang.
In 1915, the cadre and replacement battalion of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Infantry Regiment 2 (the so-called “Zweierbosniaken”) were transferred from Graz to the newly built training camp in Lebring. In the course of the war, the camp additionally housed numerous prisoners of war and labor commandos. South of the camp, a separate cemetery was established which can still be visited today. In the military cemetery in Lang 1233 soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army, including 805 Bosniaks, and 437 Italian, Romanian, Russian and Serbian prisoners of war are buried.
In 2014 and 2015, on the initiative of Mayor Joachim Schnabel (municipality of Lang), ten memorial frames were designed by the Kulturpark Hengist in cooperation with the Black Cross, the Neue Mittelschule Lebring-St. Margarethen and the elementary school Lang and erected on site. However, to date there is no printed (multilingual) information material for the numerous visitors from Austria and abroad.
Within the framework of the LEADER project “The Military Camp and the Military Cemetery Lebring/Lang,” multilingual folders for national and international visitors are to be published and a brochure with the contents of the memorial frames is to be designed. In addition, a brochure suitable for schoolchildren is being developed with the Neue Mittelschule Lebring-St. Margarethen for all secondary schools in the region.
