Leader-Project: Enhancing the Attractiveness of the ArchaeoRegion Southwest Styria

The project, carried out by ASIST, aims to make the ArchaeoRegion of Southwest Styria more attractive – in other words, presenting archaeological content to interested visitors.

Important sites and museums such as the Frauenberg temple museum, the Celtic-Roman spring sanctuary of Retznei as well as the medieval castles of Deutschlandsberg and Schwanberg are the centers of attention. Expert reconstructions of these sites are to be produced to give an idea of the ancient buildings, as well as brochures and comics that present the content in an exciting way for children and young people.

In the LEADER regions Südsteiermark and Schilcherland there are numerous important Celtic and Roman sites, medieval castles and other archaeological highlights. The project aims at communicating the distinctiveness and significance of the archaeological heritage of these sites in a technically sound and appealing way. For this purpose, 3D virtual reconstructions were created, which give a vivid impression of the archaeological heritage. The temple district on Frauenberg near Leibnitz, the Celtic-Roman villa complex at Retznei and the two medieval castles of Schwanberg and Deutschlandsberg were selected for this purpose. At these sites, the “ArchaeoRegion roller” is set up for interested visitors, arousing curiosity about history and archaeology. The QR codes on the roller refer to the ArchaeoRegion Wiki page where texts, images and maps are available. Most importantly, these links provide an entry point to the virtual models. There, visitors can either fly over the buildings or move through them.

As a special introduction to history, two comic books have been produced for children and young people, which approach historical topics in a humorous way. They also address the issue of monument protection and the problem of the destruction of the archaeological heritage through construction, intensive land use and robbery excavations.
In order to bring the findings of archaeological research to the people in the region, a series of lectures was held and several publications were produced. The future Archaeo guides, intended to continue communication to visitors, will receive a two-volume compendium as well as a guidebook containing a collection of the acquired knowledge. As a result of the project, attractive presentations, publications and brochures, by means of which sites and ruins can be walked through, will be available. In addition, new knowledge and emphasis regarding the cultural heritage within and outside the local population shall be generataed, and the subject should also be increasingly considered as a touristic resource.
